☆ Local GOP head rips SJ City Council's assault on Prop 13
Doubling down on a failed housing strategy. Higher rents. Higher cost of living. These are the results county GOP chief Shane Patrick Connolly sees emanating from SJ City Council's and state legislators' moves to subvert the popular tax safeguards in Prop 13. An Opp Now exclusive.
When Californians overwhelmingly passed Proposition 13 in 1978—protecting us from being taxed out of our homes—we did so over the opposition of basically every special interest and political institution in the State.
We are facing a similar moment now, as our one-party State legislature (with the support of the San Jose City Council) is trying to dismantle Prop 13's safeguards, and lower the voter threshold to increase taxes from 66% to 55%.
This is a terribly wrong-headed move, as it will increase housing costs and open the floodgates to further fund the state's spectacularly flawed housing policies, which do little to address homelessness and overall housing affordability.
Government policies in California are the reasons why it's so brutally expensive to live here—from sky-high rents and housing costs to inflated gas, energy, and basic cost of living prices. Support for ACA 1 is a blatant attack on Prop 13's remaining safeguards, and would just further empower runaway government folly, making California less affordable and less safe.
