Mistakes, misleading info abound in MV Voice's puff coverage of Lieber/Verbica race for Board of Equalization
The Mountain View Voice may be Sally Lieber's hometown newspaper (she's currently a Mtn View City Councilmember and is running for Board of Equalization), but home-cookin' can go a little too far, as we discovered from their election night coverage.
MVV buries the extremist nature of some of Lieber's endorsers.
After noting that Lieber has historically received the endorsement of the extremist, far-left Democratic Socialists of America, she's cited as "a pragmatist." This might get the Non-Sequiter of the Year Award in local media. The DSA is a fringe socialist group that has:
Passed resolutions calling for the abolition of private property and the acceptance of public housing as “a human right.”
Supported the centralization of our economy as set forth under the Green New Deal, which would initiate public ownership of all major energy systems and resources, i.e., coal, oil, and natural gas. (Their code name for the Green New Deal, by the way, is the Red Deal.)
You can read more about DSA here.
To be fair, we understand that just because somebody is endorsed by a particular party doesn't mean the endorsee is fully aligned with everything the endorser believes. But it's worth noting and prompts a close critique of candidates' positions.
MVV sidesteps the big issues in the race.
The MVV notes that The Board of Equalization is about "regulating county property assessment practices." This is true and accurate.
But what the MVV fails to mention is that the most important issue driving this year's Equalization race is the madcap rush to see the BOE's closure. Smart money knows that to lose the Taxpayers' Rights Advocate Office at the BOE ends one of the last vestiges of protection and spells doom for the overburdened and understandably angry California taxpayer.
