LA Taxpayers Association: It's time we safeguard CA'ns from tax hikes many oppose

The Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act would close a Prop 13 loophole by affirming that tax changes need majority voter approval, and special taxes need two-thirds approval. Though SJ City Council and local media lambaste it as dangerous, the LA Taxpayers Association believes the measure would responsibly protect taxpayer funds (especially amidst attempts to amend Prop 13 like ACA 1 & 13, both en-route to the State Senate). The Globe reports.

The Los Angeles Taxpayers Association works on state and local levels in California to promote sound tax and regulatory policy.

President Aidan Chao recently put together an extensive coalition in support of the Taxpayer Protection Act initiative. According to Chao, the association was created to “hold government accountable.”

Their current and biggest battle is fighting Assembly Constitutional Amendment 13, which makes it easier to raise taxes and erode the safeguards of Proposition 13, and support of the California Taxpayer Protection Act”

This is the Los Angeles Taxpayers Association coalition letter and embedded below:

We, the undersigned coalition of organizations and leaders, are writing to express our enthusiastic endorsement and unwavering support for the launch of the California Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act on August 14, 2023. This initiative, coming up on the ballot on November 5, 2024, represents a crucial step towards ensuring the protection of responsible fiscal policies that will benefit not only California’s economy but also its residents, businesses, and future generations.

The Taxpayer Protection Act comes at a time when the defense of Proposition 13 and 218 is of utmost importance. As the state navigates through complex economic challenges, a cost-of-living crisis, and an exodus of businesses and taxpayers, it is imperative to defend and establish safeguards that promote fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability. This Act is a testament to the commitment of a broad coalition of Californians to fostering an environment where taxpayers’ hard-earned money is managed judiciously and utilized effectively, as well as a strong rebuke to the state’s tax and spend lobby.

Collectively, the signatories of this letter represent a diverse array of industries, community organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders with a deep-rooted interest in California’s prosperity. We firmly believe that the Taxpayer Protection Act is the front line of defense for the taxpayers’ right to have a say in California’s tax policy, as well as a forward-looking step in attracting businesses back to the state, fostering job growth, and improving the quality of life for all Californians.

In closing, we extend our gratitude to the California Business Roundtable, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, the California Business Properties Association, and all of our coalition partners, for spearheading this initiative. We pledge our steadfast support as this coalition works tirelessly to promote fiscal responsibility and secure a brighter future for our great state.
