Pat Waite kicks off Opp Now’s favorite political book series
“Atlas Shrugged.” “Das Kapital.” “Common Sense.” “The Port Huron Statement.” “Soul on Ice.” “Society of the Spectacle.” “The Wealth of Nations.” In Silicon Valley's short-attention-span news cycle, we sometimes forget that policy positions and candidates’ ideas actually have an intellectual heritage, which often begins with a book. Pat Waite of Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility (CFR) inaugurates our series of favorite political reads.
A political science minor in college, I read many books on politics, my favorite being “Plato’s Republic.” That changed in 2013 when a friend recommended that I read “Behind the Green Mask: U.N. Agenda 21” by the late Rosa Koire. It’s my new political favorite and should be yours, especially if you are concerned about our country’s economic and political trajectory.
It is a clear, concise review of how our governments use bedrock ideals like expanding home ownership, clean air, mass transit, and environmental protection as a ruse to re-urbanize the United States and redistribute our wealth to other nations. She contends that a “‘problem’ is created, the ‘solution’ is the outcome that you never would have agreed to without the urgency of the problem.” Furthermore, laudable ideas are used to enact restrictive laws affecting everybody. Think COVID-19, where rather than suggesting that the most vulnerable take protective measures, entire economies were shut down to “protect Grandma and Grandpa.”
Ms. Koire does more than identify and explain U.N. Agenda 21; she provides a roadmap for the battle. Underpinned by the story of her fight against redevelopment in Santa Rosa, she concludes with a litany of actions any concerned citizen can take.
