More local calls for LA4 resignations

In its November 21 email newsletter, the South Bay Progressive Alliance (SBPA) condemned the racist comments of Kevin de Leon and the LA4, which were reported widely upon in October. The SBPA called for resignations of those involved. SBPA newsletter comments, below.

[Editors' note: List of local South Bay politicians so far calling for resignations: Nora Campos, former SJ District 5 City Council candidate; Cindy Chavez, former mayoral candidate, County Supervisor; Bien Doan, Councilmember-elect, SJ District 7; Johnny Khamis, former D1 County Supervisor candidate; Matt Mahan, SJ District 10 CM, SJ mayor-elect; Irene Smith, former SJ District 3 Council candidate.]

We also call upon our locally elected officials to join us in unequivocally condemning the racist behavior of these three L.A. Concilmembers. The reporting in San José Spotlight that local officials are mum on this issue is frankly disturbing.

This issue goes deeper than hurtful and racist remarks, serious as they were. DeLeon, Cedillo, and Nury Martinez were also involved in racist policy-making. Thousands of LA protesters of all colors continue to be outraged by their leadership of efforts to expand Municipal Code 41.18 and criminalize unhoused people (who are disproportionately African American & Latinx).

South Bay Progressive Alliance repudiates and rejects racism in any and all political candidates, community leaders, and government policies.
